A rich and ultra-moist chocolate sheet cake made with chocolate cake mix, whole milk, melted butter, four eggs, and vanilla, then finished with warm chocolate frosting for a soft bakery-style texture.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes for the original recipe timing; about 1 hour 15 minutes including full frosting-set time
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Cake

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Warm Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 container chocolate frosting
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

Optional Topping

  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup chocolate shavings

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  • Add the chocolate cake mix, whole milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to a large mixing bowl.
  • Beat for 1–2 minutes, until the batter is smooth and thick.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.
  • Spread it evenly into the corners.
  • Bake for 30–35 minutes.
  • Check the center with a toothpick. It should come out with a few moist crumbs but no wet batter.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and all foil from the frosting container.
  • Microwave the frosting for 15–20 seconds, or just until softened.
  • Stir in the heavy cream and unsalted butter until smooth and pourable.
  • Pour the warm frosting over the slightly warm cake.
  • Spread gently across the surface without pressing into the cake.
  • Add mini chocolate chips and/or chocolate shavings if desired.
  • Let the cake rest for 20–30 minutes before slicing.
  • Serve slightly warm or completely cooled.

Notes

Use whole milk for the intended rich texture. Let the melted butter cool slightly before adding it to the batter so it does not heat the eggs.

Start checking the cake at the 30-minute mark. A toothpick with a few moist crumbs is ideal. Wet batter means the cake needs more time.

Do not overheat the frosting. It only needs to become soft enough to stir and pour.

Remove all foil from the frosting container before microwaving it.

For cleaner slices, allow the frosting to set for at least 20–30 minutes before cutting.

Optional chocolate chips and shavings add extra calories and sugar, so nutrition changes depending on how much topping you use.
